Managing Invasive Plant s

Invasive plant species are a major problem for landowners in Georgia. These plants can quickly take over an area, crowding out native vegetation and causing problems for the ecosystem in your landscape. If you have invasive plants on your property, it's important to take steps to manage them effectively.

Invasive Plants in Georgia

The first step in managing invasive plant species is to identify the invasive plants on your property. There are many different species of invasive plants, so it's important to be able to identify them so you can treat them appropriately. There are three requirements for species to be considered invasive: (1) They have to be non-native to the environment, (2) they must be able to reproduce and expand on their own, and (3) they must be harmful to the environment or human health.

Georgia is home to many invasive tree species and plant species. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Kudzu
  • Japanese honeysuckle
  • Brazilian Pepper Tree
  • Chinese Tallow
  • Privet
  • Multiflora Rose

If you're not sure how to identify, manage, or
remove invasive plants on your property, contact a professional landscaping company near you such as Heritage Forestry Mulching that can help you take care of the problem.

Managing Invasive Plant Species

At this point, you may be asking yourself: “How do I get rid of invasive plants?”

In many cases, invasive tree species can be eliminated by using chemicals or controlled fires. However, the most effective way for managing overgrowth is through manual control consisting of three processes:

  1. Brush Cutting: The first step in managing invasive species is getting to the source. This typically involves using a cutter on branches and brush in order to access the tree’s trunk and roots.
  2. Mulching: Mulching is the process of grinding trees and brush down into finer material for quick decomposition.
  3. Stump Grinding: To prevent invasive trees in Georgia from re-sprouting, you’ll need to grind down the stump to below ground level. This will also make it easier to replant the area with native vegetation. This process is typically done after trees have been cut or mulched.

Once the invasive plants have been removed, it's important to take steps to prevent them from returning. This may include planting native vegetation, using herbicides in problem areas, and creating physical barriers (such as fences) to prevent re-infestation.
